How Eloping is Bringing Sexy Back
Once upon a time, the act of elopement was done out of necessity rather than choice.
Now that we have entered into a whole new generation, however, this way of thinking really isn’t the case anymore. Couples have recently begun to dream about the idea of smaller, more intimate settings that allow for a slower pace and more of an opportunity to get hitched in areas that might otherwise be inaccessible to large groups.
But despite that fact, you may be wondering- is eloping really the right choice for me?
As we all know, society has slipped into a new (and rather interesting) normal thanks to how the state of the world is progressing. If you haven’t considered eloping to be an option before, it may be an excellent idea to consider now! With a brief history of what eloping is and how it fits perfectly into today’s society, we hope to highlight just how wonderful an elopement can be.
The History of Eloping
Perhaps when you think of eloping, you envision two star struck lovers running away together in order to be joined as one despite the wishes of an evil father.
While that description may sound really “Romeo and Juliet-esque”, it’s actually a rather spot on picture of what eloping primarily involved. In fact, according to the Merriam-Webster, the version of eloping that we are familiar with means “to run away secretly with the intention of getting married usually without parental consent” and has been used since around the 1800’s.
Before that however, one of the earliest associations with elopement goes even deeper than simply two lovers running away with each other. In 1338, The History of Elopement points out that the act of eloping was actually when a women would leave her husband in order to run away with a lover. While this is definitely a shocking revelation (and definitely one that most people don’t want to take part in), the good news is that these are not the only definitions of eloping! A sweeter and far more appealing way to describe eloping, is simply “to slip away”, which is what many couples are taking advantage of in this day and age.

Why to Consider Eloping vs. Traditional Wedding
Choosing to elope over a traditional wedding may be a good idea for couples who are on the fence about what to do for their special day.
Perhaps it simply sounds amazing to plan the event exactly the way you want, without having other peoples’ opinions hanging over head.
Maybe you both just love a good adventure or truly need to runaway together in order to make things work.
Whatever the case may be, here are 5 reasons why eloping might be for you:
1. Affordable
A main stressor in weddings is definitely finances. The bonus about eloping is that it lessens this stress by quite a lot. Instead of worrying about how much table décor and food costs, a couple can instead focus on what is most important to them on that day- whether that be pictures, decorations, or simply the gas to drive somewhere.
2. Easier to Travel
Destination weddings are always a wonderful thing to dream about, but they kind of tie in with the problem of number 1 in that they can cost a lot of money to pull off. Not only do you have to plan on getting guests to the right location, but there is also the concern of lodging for everyone. With an elopement, couples can just worry about themselves and a select few- making a trip to a dream spot far easier to achieve!
3. Photography Freedom
Anyone who has been part of a wedding knows how quickly time can fly by. This can make getting every single picture desired a bit of a challenge! But when eloping, there are less people and props to worry about-making it all the easier to get the most out of the photographer’s time.
4. Intimate
When planning for a wedding, there is no doubt that the couple is thinking about the moments that they will get to spend together- that first time at the altar, the first dance, and the drive off into the sunset with cans rattling behind them. But what if the entire day could be filled with those intimate moments? With an elopement, it can be! With no schedule, the couple can spend as little or as much time doing whatever they want, making it as special as possible down to the last second.
5. Social Distancing
With all that has been going on in the world, canceled weddings or the fear of having to rearrange plans to meet the criteria of social distancing can add unwanted stress. For those couples who consider eloping, that stress can melt away as less people means less table setting and more time for enjoying the day!

Conclusion
In our modern world, there is no reason why eloping has to mean anything negative. Opting out of a traditional wedding in favor of a day that’s full of the same amount of love-with a little more room to stretch-is a choice that is definitely worth celebrating.
