What's in my camera bag for wedding photography ?

A question that potential clients ask from time to time is what gear or equipment do I use. This is a very interesting question because it may mean that the potential client is also a photographer themselves (or at least has some understanding about camera equipment in general). I believe the question of equipment is a great one to ask as it’s an excellent way to make sure the photographer in question takes their job seriously and has invested in gear that won’t let you down on such an important and fast paced day such as a wedding.

A Matter of Equipment: Photographer’s Insight

A question that potential clients ask from time to time is what gear or equipment do I use. This is a very interesting question because it may mean that the potential client is also a photographer themselves (or at least has some understanding about camera equipment in general). I believe the question of equipment is a great one to ask as it’s an excellent way to make sure the photographer in question takes their job seriously and has invested in gear that won’t let you down on such an important and fast paced day such as a wedding.

Shot with Canon EOS R + RF 24-105 MM

I decided my website was the best place to answer the question of what equipment I use! I’m hoping this article will provide a little bit more information on which specific equipment I choose to bring to a wedding event along with the reason why.

Gadgets Galore

I’ve always loved new gadgets. I feel like a child on Christmas morning every time I get a piece of shiny new photography equipment to check out. I’ve tested and used so much stuff throughout my career and my setup is constantly changing and evolving. I’m always on the lookout for better and faster ways to get the best results possible, therefore giving my clients a great experience overall.

Since I’m constantly shaping my style by always learning and continuing my education, my gear and set ups have also changed and evolved over time. I wish I could say that I didn’t “waste money” on buying stuff I didn’t really need, but I like to think that I wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t invested in my equipment. So really, all that money “wasted” is actually money well spent! After all, testing out new tools is how I realize what works for me and what’s not necessary.

Let’s take a look at some of my go-to wedding day equipment!

Nomatic Petter McKinnon Backpack

First off is my main camera bag. For some reason I LOVE camera bags and I still own probably one too many, but they do serve different purposes and I will use a different bag if it suits a different job a bit better. For now I use the Petter McKinnon Backpack for most of my wedding jobs as it fits most of what I need perfectly, preventing me from overpacking. I used to bring a big rolling case to all my gigs, but now I only keep such a bag for when it’s really necessary. Otherwise, I found myself doing the following things:

  • Utilizing “quantity” over “quality” of the items I packed.

  • Packing my flashes and lenses “neatly” but in too many different cases, making it difficult to stay organized.

  • Packing in a way that looked nice initially, but became super cluttered overtime.

  • Spending way too much time preparing my numerous amount of extra bags.

Narrowing down my equipment to just one main bag helps to eliminate all of these problems and helps me stay organized and professional no matter what job I’m headed to! I also bring a shoulder bag containing extra batteries, cards, and an extra lens or two. This bag is meant for those times where I need to go to a separate location and I only need to bring a few things. That way the other backpack stays at the main location while I use the smaller shoulder bag to easily bring along the essentials that I will need at the time.

Now let’s talk about what’s in my bag

The Camera

My main camera is currently a Canon EOS R6. I LOVE this camera and it’s by far my favorite camera I’ve ever owned. I get excited when new cameras come out and when the Canon EOS R was announced I was excited for the brand to be entering the mirrorless world. But, I was very disappointed by the specs and lack of new features. The Canon EOS R6 finally checked all the boxes for me and I’m excited to see what comes next in the upcoming years. My Canon EOS R is now my second camera when I need to shoot with two cameras at the same time or just a backup for when I don’t need to be carrying both.

Lenses

If I could only own one lens the Canon RF 28-70 f2 would be it. I quickly fell in love with this lens when it was announced in 2018. I just kept renting it and loved it so much I had to buy one despite it’s price! At just around $3k this lens is more expensive than my camera and heavier as well; it’s a BEAST. The lens itself weighs 3.15 lbs and although it may not sound like much, it’s definitely a workout when you add the weight of the camera and a flash (not to mention carry it around for 8+ hours during a wedding). Despite the weight and size, this lens is amazing and I use it for 90% of a wedding day. It has made my other lenses become more of “specialty” lenses where I only use them or need them for very specific tasks.

Here are just a few examples of what this lens can do:

My second lens is the beloved Canon EF 135mm f2. This was the first lens I bought when I was starting my career as a wedding photographer. I wanted that beautiful compression of a telephoto lens combined with a wide aperture at f2. This lens is incredible! It is the only lens that I’ve had for over 8 years now and I still bring it to every shoot. Many other lenses have come and gone but this one is very special. I’m really looking forward to the new mirrorless version and seeing how Canon improves such an awesome lens.

Now let’s talk about the Canon RF 15-35 f2.8. Ironically, this lens was one of the first ones to be on my wishlist when I was in school. I loved landscape photography and this was my dream lens. However, when I started my career in photography and I could finally afford it, I didn’t buy it. This was simply because it just made more sense to buy other stuff first for the type of work I was doing. It took many years for me to finally get it, but I'm so glad I did! It's awesome for getting shots of an empty hall and showing off the decoration. I also like to use it during the reception and capture the guest having fun asit makes the viewer feellike they’re right there on the dance floor. Ironically I don’t do much landscape photography anymore and I haven’t used this lens for that perhaps much anymore, but I’m still very happy to have it in my kit.

The Follow Up Question: “Do You Bring Your Own Lighting”

The answer to this question is yes. I love to create my own light and it’s something I’m constantly improving on. By knowing how to use flash I’m ready to battle any circumstance that I may be into such as dark venues, or too much DJ color lights. There is no such thing as “natural light” at a reception, there is only available light and if the available light is not flattering, making your own available light is super helpful.

For lighting, I recently switched from Godox to Profoto although I still own a few Godox strobes. The more I take flash seriously, the more I expect out of the performance of my gear. I currently bring two Profoto A10s and one Profoto B10. If I need a lot more power and I know I will need to overpower the midday sun, I will bring my Godox Strobe: but for most scenarios the Profoto kit gets the job done.

Not all the photos below were taken with the Profoto A10 or B10 but this is what knowing how to make your own light can do:

EOS R + RF 35mm f1.8 + Profoto B10 + 36” Softbox & Grid

Accessories

The rest of the items in my camera bag are mostly accessories for everything mentioned above. I use the MAGMOD system for one of my Profoto A10s and I use the Profoto version for the other two lights. The system includes corrective gels such as CTOs and CTBs— to correct or use white balance creatively— grids to control the light spill of the flashes, bounce cards, etc.

When possible I like to bring a gridded Softbox. This is something I may not be able to use every time due to schedule, so it depends on the wedding. But when I can, I like to use a big 36” Softbox mainly for the couple’s session of the wedding.

Lastly, I bring a set of 3 Manfrotto light-stands in different sizes. The nano stands are great for tight spaces and the bigger versions are perfect for creating peace of mind when holding such expensive lights during the reception.

To Wrap it Up

Having top of the line equipment doesn’t mean top of the line results. The person using the equipment is the most important piece of the puzzle; you can even get professional looking results with just your phone if you know what you’re doing!

Although I genuinely believe that you can get amazing results using just about anything, and or any brand nowadays, what I look for in my gear as a working professional is it’s ease of use and reliability. I want a piece of equipment that will help me get from point A to point B a little bit faster and smoother and it won’t fail or break down along the way.

The Pros and Cons of First Look Photos

When it comes to considering whether a wedding shoot will include a first look or not, there can be a lot of controversy over the subject.

This most likely has to do with the fact that two well-loved traditions are being put head-to-head, aka the classic tradition (with the first look being from the altar), and the modern tradition (where the couple has an intimate moment before the ceremony to see each other and take photos).

One Major List to Keep in Mind Before Planning A First Look

Wedding Photographer in Sedona AZ

When it comes to considering whether a wedding shoot will include a first look or not, there can be a lot of controversy over the subject.

This most likely has to do with the fact that two well-loved traditions are being put head-to-head, aka the classic tradition (with the first look being from the altar), and the modern tradition (where the couple has an intimate moment before the ceremony to see each other and take photos).

What is a First Look?

Let’s dive a little further into this second tradition.

For many, a first look can be described as a private moment between the wedding couple where (traditionally) the groom has his back turned while the bride comes up behind him. She then taps him on the shoulder and once he turns around, the photographer captures his emotion of seeing his bride in her dress for the first time. While it may not happen as often, another cute way to do a first look may be to have the roles reversed, where the groom sneaks up behind the bride and they both enjoy the surprise of seeing each other for the first time!

Whether couples want to follow the classic version of the first look or switch it up to fit their individual style ( goofy, themed, LGBTQ+, reversed roles, and more), there is no doubt that this moment can be extraordinary for the couple as it provides an opportunity to spend some alone time together on the wedding day. Additionally, this event also provides the photographer with loads of wonderful photo content.

Is a First Look Really Necessary?

To stick with a surprise coming down the aisle or to see your true love before the ceremony, that is the question!

This is exactly why we have gathered a short pros-and-cons list to help determine whether a first look will be the perfect fit for you or not. No matter what you decide, just remember that this is your day and you can always choose to change your mind if things don’t feel quite right-even if it is on the day of the event!

A great photographer will be more than capable of adjusting the schedule to meet your needs as best as possible, so don’t be afraid to ask.

First Look Pros

- Ease anxious feelings

For those who are feeling a bit nervous on their big day (which is completely normal by the way), a first look can be an excellent opportunity to get those jitters out. Taking a quiet moment together to soak each other in while thoroughly appreciating the wedding location and the feelings of the day is an excellent method of capturing gorgeous pictures- while also letting the tears and smiles flow freely!

- Create more time for photos

There are a couple of elements that play into this topic. For instance, if you have a winter wedding, time is of the essence! Especially if the ceremony is taking place in the evening. Because the sun typically sets anywhere between 4:30-5:30 pm, depending on your location. This can create an added rush to getting the couple shots taken after the ceremony and before the sun sets. With a first look, this haste can be avoided, as couples are able to take their time in getting those precious moments captured before the wedding even starts.

Along the same line, getting a first look done for any ceremony can decrease the amount of wait time for guests between the ceremony and reception. By using the opportunity to take photos together ahead of time, once the ceremony ends only family photos will need to be taken- and then everyone can head off to party at the reception!

- Enjoy a moment of privacy

Once guests begin to arrive and the event kicks off, everything else will be a total whirlwind! Having a first look can provide an opportunity to breathe, soak each other in, and appreciate just how special this day is. Getting that first hug or even saying a prayer together works wonders in setting the mood for the rest of the day- not to mention the photos of such moments are priceless.

- Capture the emotion

There is no doubt tears are going to be shed at a wedding! This is just one more reason why a first look can be so valuable, as it provides an awesome opportunity for those raw and precious emotions to be captured for the couple while they are within an arm’s reach of each other. Of course, when walking down the aisle you’ll see the same emotions, but it’s a bit more difficult to get both of the individual’s faces in the same shot. With a first look, such photography hurdles can be avoided and those intimate moments can be captured in time to be cherished forever.

First Look Cons

- Keep the magic of tradition alive

To witness the initial reaction of everyone in the room as a beautiful bride walks down the aisle is, without a doubt, a moment of pure magic. It is completely alright if you would like to do a first look as a couple, however, it’s important to keep in mind that doing so may take away from the following of classic tradition and saving the first look as a surprise for during the ceremony.

- Emotional pressure

For some individuals, sharing their emotions can be an extremely sensitive thing. If couples are planning to do a first look, each individual should try to be sensitive to this fact and understand that their sweetheart may not have the same reaction as could be expected. This doesn’t mean the excitement isn’t there, it might just be showed in a different way!

- Early to bed, early to rise

To make the most of a first look, the wedding schedule may need to be adjustment in order to get the best set up possible. Scheduling can also, of course, be affected by how quickly everyone gets ready. Don’t feel the need to rush if everyone is running behind, however! It’s totally ok if the first look can’t happen as planned- there will always be time to get plenty of amazing pictures on your special day.

- Lighting may not be perfect

Similar to the con listed above, sometimes lighting for first looks just isn’t ideal. This is because more often than not, these shoots take time during full daylight, which can cause some complications. If the lighting is harsh, couples may need to take more photos after the ceremony anyway, so don’t be too discouraged if the first look doesn’t turn out as planned!

Key Points to Remember

A wedding is special.

It doesn’t matter what traditions you choose to follow, what colors you decide to use, or whether you have it in Bermuda versus the Arctic. All that matters is the joining of two lives together in a beautiful and wonderful way!

So, get that first look, or don’t. But just remember to have a fabulous time and soak in every single second from beginning to end.

Why Engagement Photoshoots are Important

Why Engagement Sessions Matter More Than You May Think

Congratulations!

If you have found yourself on this page, it is most likely because you are recently engaged or well on your way to having that ever so important question bestowed upon you. This is such an exciting time and we are thrilled to share even a small part of it with you and that special someone.

For those who have this question, and perhaps many more running through their heads when it comes to engagement sessions, the good news is that we have answers! Continue reading to discover what we believe to be the top 5 most important reasons why every new couple should consider booking an e-session.

Regardless of whether you’ve been engaged for a long time or since yesterday, there is a pretty good chance that you have heard about engagement photoshoots (also known as e-sessions by some). To give a little bit more context of what an e-session is, we like to describe them as small, intimate photo shoots that happen for engaged couples in a location(s) of their choice (outside, inside, at home, etc.).

Sounds pretty awesome right?

Although we agree, some may have a few doubts about engagement shoots. Wedding planning can already be crazy enough as it is, so why even bother with an extra photoshoot before the big day even comes around?

For those who have this question, and perhaps many more running through their heads when it comes to engagement sessions, the good news is that we have answers! Continue reading to discover what we believe to be the top 5 most important reasons why every new couple should consider booking an e-session.

1. You can get amazing images for your wedding announcements.

Have you ever opened up your mailbox and seen that perfectly quaint envelope from a friend that you just know contains a wedding invite? Upon pulling out the contents, an adorable card with gorgeous photos of the couple jumps out at you along with the joyous invitation to join them for their special day. Lots of times, these photos are captured during an engagement shoot. With the ability to highlight the engagement ring, showcase lovely scenery, and frame each bright smile from the happy couple, e-sessions are the absolute best for capturing high-quality images to use on such an invite or save the date of your own.

2. Get some practice in front of the camera.

For those who haven’t had much time in front of a lens, getting professional photos done can feel a bit intimidating- and that’s ok! Taking the time to get an engagement session done helps a couple to loosen up and practice poses that they love in order to get more comfortable for the big day. An excellent photographer is key in making photos go smoothly, but there is no doubt that practice makes progress- so don’t be afraid to book that e-session and get your lovebug out there for some fun photo exercises (the end result will be worth it, we promise)!

3. Become more familiar with your photographer.

If this is the first time interacting with your wedding photographer, e-sessions are a great way to learn how you can work together to accomplish your goals. Through utilizing Pinterest pages and examples of photo poses that you already love, you and your photographer can get a feel for a unique style that will fit your special day perfectly. Practicing this style during an engagement shoot can not only help you as a couple feel more confident, but it can also help to build that trust between your photographer as well- making the wedding day sessions even more of a breeze!

Engagement photographer Phoenix 05.jpg

4. Create lifetime memories for an important milestone.

Getting engaged is a super important time for a couple! It is that big first step before fully committing that states “hey, I think you’re amazing and I want to spend my life with you”. For some couples, an engagement can last for many years, while for others just a few months at a time. Regardless of how long the engagement may last, taking photos to mark the memory of that first step is such a great way to build as a couple. One day, you can look back at those photos and compare them to your wedding (or even later anniversary photos) to see how much the two of you have grown together over time. It’s an extremely special and sweet tradition that can be wonderful to share with family and friends alike!

Boyce Thompson Arboretum Engagement

5. Deepen the bond between you and your partner in a fun way.

An engagement session may be the first time that you, as a couple, are getting professional photos taken. It’s like a super special date with a professional there to capture the two of you looking your best and feeling totally in love! Doesn’t that sound amazing? As you start out on your journey together, an e-session can be the perfect way to bond with your partner in one (or many) of your favorite areas. Take a few in that spot on the beach where you first met at sunset, then you could even jog on over to a little boutique where you received flowers for the first time, before finally heading home to capture a few quiet moments in a house that you are going to be (or have already been) making your own. It may surprise you just how much fun can be had simply by having your relationship captured on camera!

And there you have it.

While the simple act of an engagement session may seem small in comparison to the big day, there is no doubt in our minds that it is one of the most important parts of a total wedding experience. Taking the time to get more comfortable with the camera and your photographer while also bonding as a couple is so vital. Not only will the experience provide an opportunity to use the photos before the wedding as you see fit, but an e-session will also create that perfect little moment to embrace the one you love and celebrate the choice the two of you have made forever after.

So, get your engagement ring ready and that dream location set, we have memories to capture!

Tips & tricks for the perfect sparkler exit

Sparklers exits can be a fun way to bid your friends and family farewell after an amazing day. This is your moment to shine, take it all in, and have a great time. Not to mention the perfect opportunity for some fun creative photos but they do require planning and forethought. That’s where we as professional photographers come in. We want to bring your vision to life so here’s our tips and tricks to pulling off the perfect sparkler exit.

Sparklers for wedding send off

Wedding sparklers exits can be a fun way to bid your friends and family farewell after an amazing day.

  1. Will my venue allow sparklers?

Always start off with speaking to your venue. Make sure they allow a sparkler send off and ask them where. Many venues will have one specific spot for safety reasons which makes it easy to plan for, if multiple locations are available take into consideration the space and other lights. You want a large enough area where people can safely stand without burning each other as well as a place where there won’t be any bright lights to interfere with the ambient sparklers.

  2. What type of sparklers should I use?

Get the longest slow burning sparklers you can find; 20 inches (up to 100 guests) - 36 inches (100+ guests) This allows time for everyone to get theirs lit before the first one starts going out. Have a few people spaced out with long BBQ lighters or even a few candles to help light them. Candles can add an extra bit of light and help get the sparklers lit faster. Your photographer will also need time to get into position and take a test shot or two for the perfect set-up. If you can find ones that say smoke free that's a great option as well.

  3. How can I safely hold them?

Hold them high, lol it’s always great to get a funny ducking shot but we dont want anyone going up in flames so having guests hold them high is great.

  4. What do I do as I walk through the sparklers?

GO SLOW, walk slow and stop periodically so that you’re surrounded by the ambient light, this is the perfect time for a dramatic kiss, picking the bride up for a quick spin, hands in the air celebration, or even just dancing down the line. Remember this is your moment, you don't have to look at the camera; look at guests, each other, take it all in! We will be, as long as the fire is lit we’ll be taking pictures!

  5. How do I get my guests organized for my sparkler exit?

Coordinating and informing your guests can make or break this experience. Have your DJ help with reading a short list of do’s/don'ts from this article and then with positioning them in a row of two lines facing each other. Having a specific person such as a maid of honor or best man be in charge of handing out the sparklers and arranging the guests can be a huge help. Your venue may even have a coordinator that can assist with this. Have them line up guests prior to giving out the sparklers. This will help to ensure the sparklers are not lit before everyone is in place and ready to go.

  6. Who needs to know about my exit plans?

Make sure to inform your wedding photographer and videographer that you’re planning a sparkler exit. They will need to do a few special things to set up for capturing this exciting moment for you to be able to look back on for years to come. Ask to see their work/experience with this type of send off.

  7. When is the best time to have the exit?

Plan for the last dance song to end 20 minutes prior to your exit as it takes time for guests to get into position.

  8. Where do guests safely extinguish the sparklers?

Talk with your venue about an emergency plan in the rare case that someone gets hurt or a sparkler lights something on fire. They will usually have a first aid kit as well as a fire extinguisher nearby. Guests will need a place to put them out and throw them away. A bucket of sand or water is generally a safe option.

  9. What can I do if I have extra sparklers?

If you have any extra left over, talk to your photographer about taking some artsy photos, spelling out words or making a heart with you two in the middle. You can plan some time to do these after the exit or during your formal photos if you’re doing them around sunset. This light painting can be fun and make for great photos.

  10. What’s a fun alternative to sparklers?

Lastly, if your venue does not allow open flames or sparklers for your exit we have some fun alternative ideas. Glow sticks that are long and skinny or short and fat are both two great alternatives. Guests can safely wave them around or just hold them as you exit. Light up noodles are also fun. Many of the noodles we’ve seen have the ability to blink but for an exit having your guests turn them onto a continuous setting will work the best. Bubbles are another fun exit that can be done outside especially if your exit is planned before dark.

Ways to honor late loved ones at your wedding

This may be an obvious statement, but when it comes to very important life events like weddings, not having that special family member or friend present can make the festivities seem just a little bit different. Thankfully, quite a few beautiful traditions exist which couples can incorporate into their ceremony in order to honor those individuals and keep them a special part of the wedding day!

What Everybody Ought To Know About Honoring Loved Ones on Their Wedding Day

Losing a loved one is never easy.

Whether you want to keep the process of honoring loved ones small and simple, or make it a key part of the ceremony, there is no doubt that taking a moment to remember those who couldn’t be at the wedding is a special memory that many won’t soon forget.

Let’s take a look at a few of our favorite examples.

Save a Seat

Regardless of how many loved ones are unable to physically attend your wedding, saving them a seat within your gathered family and friends is an excellent way to bring honor to their memory. Subtle but sweet, this tradition can be accomplished through methods such as placing a framed photograph, flowers, or a personal item of that individual on a chair. Having this seat located in the front row will make it easy to look out into the crowd and remember your loved ones during this special occasion.

Ring Chimes

This is a beautiful tradition that many people may not know about. If you are getting married outside, you can honor the memory of your loved ones by hanging up a small chime. Every time the wind blows, the comforting sound of soft chimes will wash over everyone-giving a sense of remembrance for the loved ones that have been lost. If chimes aren’t your thing, a string of small bells or framed glass mobiles could also be enchanting replacements.

Have a Memorial Table

Decorating a little table with photos and trinkets from your loved ones is a whimsical and memorable way to honor loved ones at your wedding. Whether you want to have it as part of the ceremony, reception, or both, this tradition is perfect for showcasing the memory of beloved family and friends that couldn’t be a part of your special day. This is also a perfect option if there are multiple people you want to remember without taking up too much space. With a large enough table, each person can have a personalized section that best honors their memory.

Wear a Treasured Accessory

Do you have a necklace from your grandma? Perhaps a coin or ring from your grandpa? Maybe you even have your mother’s old wedding dress that you’d like to incorporate into your own! These personal items are incredibly special and make honoring loved ones on your wedding day a breeze. Simply incorporate them into your outfit, hair, or bouquet for a unique way of keeping those special people near and dear to your heart.

Include a Special Song to the Dance List

If dancing will be included at your wedding, try selecting a song to represent the loved ones that have been lost. This uniquely special tradition can be a bit emotional, especially for those who may be choosing the song for their lost mother or father who can’t be there for the dance, but what a wonderful way to incorporate those important people into your day! Hold close to the loved ones that are present and honor the memory of those who aren’t through the magic of music. There is no doubt that it will be a memory to last a life time.

While these traditions are just a few of the many ways to honor lost loved ones during your wedding, there is no doubt that they are unique, easy to accomplish, and perfect for remembering the special people that were part of your life. Don’t be discouraged if none of the above options were up your alley though! Feel free to take inspiration from one, or all, of them and put your own twist into a new tradition. Whatever you decide to do, it will be an extremely special way to add to your wedding and keep those who mean so much to you close.
